These plates
are standard Fender size – 2” x 2.5” – made of steel and either chrome-plated or
gold-plated. These plates weigh approximately 50 grams (1.8 ounces).
THE PROCESS:
Standard lasers cannot engrave into metal because their light’s long
wavelengths are reflected off the metal. We use a multi-step process that covers
the surface with a specially designed compound that the laser permanently fuses
to the metal. Your design appears black on the chrome or gold background, making
it highly visible under most lighting conditions. If you rub your fingers over
the surface, you’ll feel the fused material, but these plates stand up well to
normal handling, rubbing, and environmental conditions. If they get dirty, clean
with a mild liquid detergent or rubbing alcohol. Do not apply any protective
sealants.
IDEAL DESIGN FEATURES:
These plates only show
monochromatic designs (black-on-chrome, or black-on-gold). Try to keep the
design limited to the center of the plate (between the screw holes) and follow
these guidelines for best results:
Text: Fairly thick font styles, sizes 10 and
up. Thicker styles will look better than thinner styles. Text that we insert
into the design will look much better than if you send us an image that includes
text.
Graphics: Most graphic designs that have
strong features. Thin lines and subtle features will not show up. Dark-on-light
images work best.
Photographs: Since results are
monochromatic, these plates are not as good for photographs as our photo plates.
We emulate gray tones by using dithering (mixing little dots with white space).
This technique works well with photos that have good contrast and a fair amount
of white in them. Engraving should be CLOSE UP of the subject. You should ask us to check photograph suitability before
purchasing these plates.
Features that won’t work well: Fine lines.
Subtle shading and highlighting. Very detailed photographs.
